We have two classes: Puffins and Penguins.
Mr Bellenie teaches Puffins. Mrs Stevens is the teaching assistant.
Penguin class is taught by Mr Esposito with Mrs Jones as the teaching assistant.
Mrs Eccles will teach art and Mr Lund will teach PE for both classes.
You will need to bring your water bottle and book bag to school every day.
PE will be on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Children will need to wear their PE kit on these days. Please make sure earrings are removed or taped.
In order to support your child to their full potential, homework is taking higher priority this year as discussed at the parent information evening.
Homework is set every Thursday via Google Classroom.
We have split them into 3 sections:
Must - We expect the children to do this section every week.
Should - The children should be having a go at this section of the homework, yet we understand it may not get done every week.
Could - This is to extend topic interests and is an optional part of the homework.
Please spend some time supporting your child with these activities. We do understand time can be an issue over weekends so homework will be set on a Thursday. Please turn in their work with your comment about how much support your child needed on Google Classroom.
Regular reading is still expected and we are asking children and/or parents to record reading at least 3 times a week in their new CAPER diary. Please keep books in their protective plastic wallets in their book-bags and have them in school everyday.
You have been issued with a homework book. You can use this to practise spelling and to complete any homework. You do not need to bring this in to school. Please take a photo of any work or write a comment and send it in through Google Classroom.
Over the year, we need to build up a picture of your child’s reading interests and capabilities. An essential part of this is using the CAPER diary. Please make a short comment EVERY time they read at home; this should be a minimum of 3 times a week.
To help to build up useful evidence of your child’s reading progress, please use the following types of comments when recording in the diary:
XXXX (Name of child) was able to give a prediction saying ……
XXXX read fluently but needed to segment and blend ‘dangerous’
XXXX said the character P was greedy because …
XXXX enjoyed finding facts about snails and found the answer to questions
XXXX wanted to read this book because he likes the author and has also read ….
XXXX thought this story was similar to the book ZZZ because …
XXXX read this to themselves but recalled all the events of the story.
It does not need to be an essay but a more detailed comment like the examples above is extremely useful when finding evidence.
We also encourage the children to write their own comments.

Year 2 children are on a quest. Will you rise to the challenge?
Quest 1: Become a world champion archer. What will you use to make a bow? Which material works the best?
Quest 2: Become a knight. Do you have what it takes to be a knight? Are you limited by gender? How does the king recruit his knights?
Quest 3: Defend the realm. We become historians to find out who worked in castles and why their position is important to an area.
Quest 4: Take care! After receiving a mysterious package children speculate what it might contain. We look at the characteristics of invertebrates, insects, amphibians and birds and how they compare to mammals.
Any quest would not be complete without a celebratory banquet at the end. Who will join us?
Our Learning Journey this term begins with our trip to Arundel Castle and exploring life in castles.
There are going to be a few surprises along the way!
After half term, we will be finding out about how to be a knight.
Our Fabulous Finish will be a banquet, where the children can dress up as a knight.
We estimate that the cost of all trips and visitors in Year 2 will be approximately £50.
As always, we appreciate offers of help in the classroom (please speak to your child’s teacher).
Involve your child in counting, shopping and cooking to help their maths skills develop in everyday activities.
If you want to do activities related to the topic, you could…
Take your child to visit some castles so they can:
We will be sending a variety of homework activities this term through Google Classroom that will enable you to be involved with your child’s learning.
Please continue to read daily and record this in your child's CAPER diary. Please practise spellings with your child daily using different strategies (for example, Look Cover Write Check and writing these into sentences).
Do you have what it takes to stay warm when it's cold and cold when it's hot? This is a term of two halves!
We begin our journey investigating what life is like in the polar regions. We explore the continents of the world and research the animals and humans that live in the coldest places on Earth. We use many rich texts to inspire our own writing of stories and poems. We think about what it takes to keep warm in science. In art, we are inspired by the most amazing natural light show on our planet.
We then travel back in time to a momentous day in 1666 London, as we warm ourselves up from our polar experiences. We use the events of that day to inspire our writing and our construction. We also consider how to stay safe with fire in our modern world.
We will be receiving a visit from our local fire service. This is an exciting experience to develop the children's understanding of fire safety.
Later in the term, we also dress up as a person from London 1666, who lived through the fire, as part of a drama day!
We estimate that the cost of all trips and visitors in Year 2 will be approximately £50.
If you are able to help us in the classroom, please let us know. We always welcome offers of help!
If you want to do activities related to the topic, you could.....
Where better to be on a summer's day than on the beach? We start our topic exploring our local seaside and learn about our town's rich history. We also look at our place in the wider world thinking about its oceans, the shoreline and the features of the beach. A wealth of amazing seaside literature will introduce us to Mr and Mrs Grinling, inspire us to write, help us to make his lunch and follow one of Mrs Grinling's own recipes. The amazing sights and sounds of the seaside will inspire our science, art and design including discussion of topical issues such as threats to our oceans.
This term, Year 2 will be taking an exciting journey through shimmering shores. We will take a trip to the beach which will give the children a valuable opportunity to explore their local area and identify how Worthing seafront has changed over the years.
We will be visiting the Sealife Centre in Brighton to learn more about the different creatures living in our oceans.
We will also have a visit from Sussex Dolphin Project who will teach us about marine life in our local waters.
We estimate that the cost of all trips and visitors in Year 2 will be approximately £50.
We will need helpers for our trip to Worthing Seafront. Please ensure you have a Broadwater DBS and have had the safeguarding training. Please speak to the office about this.
Please continue to read daily and practise spellings with your child.
Involve your child in counting, shopping and cooking to help their maths skills develop in everyday activities. Take your child to the beach and allow them to explore!
Research Worthing and sea creatures.
Please let us know if you have any expertise or resources that will support our topic.
We will be sending a variety of homework activities this term on Google Classroom that will enable you to be involved with your child’s learning.
